Lockheed T-33A-1-LO 51-4413 494th Fighter-Bomber Squadron, 48th Fighter-Bomber Group, Chaumont AB, France.
Force landed with engine failure and fire near Chaumont AB 12Oct53. Repaired at Châteauroux AB, France. 7373rd Maintenance Group, Air Force Europe, Châteauroux 14Jun55. 3131st Maintenance Group, Air Materiel Command, Châteauroux on the 1st of January '56.
The aircraft, piloted by Maj. Howard J. Curran, departed Châteauroux, France for Naples, Italy on the 23rd of December '57.
Apparently faulty navigational instruments and high winds had caused him to be off course twice over Albania. The aircraft was intercepted by two MiG-15's over the city of Elbasan and directed towards the un-completed runway at Rinas, near Tirana.
The plane landed on the runway but because it was still uncompleted or because of a hard landing, the front tire blew off. The pilot was released after interrogation on the 9th of January '58.
Aircraft was moved by road to Gjirocaster.
Displayed at the National Museum of Weapons, Gjirokastër, Albania [last noted 2018 in poor condition].
