The ref does not have to ask for VAR. There is an office in Moscow with officials watching the game. They can contact the Ref and tell him to review the video. It happened in the Portugal - Iran game and got Iran a Penalty kick.

I know, we see this a lot in cricket which has a similar system. If the ref gives a penalty then the VAR refs will look to see if he has made an obvious error that is Is it reasonable to allow the penalty kick. If he doesn't award a penalty then VAR will look for an error the other way.

Me too. The game against Tunisia left me bloody annoyed, and i would have been (expletive) angry!, had it not been for the late winner. But the Panama game was much better. We were ruthless and im sure it would have given the players a lot of confidence. Just need to remember to keep their feet on the ground and not become complacent. But im sure Southgate will have told them that. Im a long suffering Aston Villa fan so i know Southgate wel from his playing days at villa. It's still early to tell but he is actually a manager i have some belief in. Unlike the trail of foreign managers that have had the England job before him. But yes the real acid test is the Belgium game. I was looking at the stats earlier and both teams are very closely matched. I would be happy with a draw tbh. But the way Belgium are playing and Lukaku in particular i wouldnt be too upset or surprised if we lost.
It's going to be interesting for sure.
Oh and as for the stick removal, im still pretty sore. I've been trying some cooling gel for the burning sensation, but tbh it's probably the only time in my life that i wish i had a gay snowman living next door! lol

You may have to wait a bit, on the radio it just said Belgium will change at least 6 possibly all 10 outfield players, England could well do the same.
True, but from what i have heard the England players want to finish top of the group. And im not going to argue with that. It shows pride and passion to be the best. Plus Southgate was coy to announce any major changes. Personally i think it would be wrong. If a team is performing well then why tinker. The old adage, if it aint broke dont fix it. I wouldnt be surprised to see one or two changes but i think it would be better to keep the momentum going.

It's the staff monitoring the game that make the decisions about VAR, and what they think is right or wrong. And it's simply an aid for the ref whenever he might miss or not notice any infringements. The problem is, as we seen with Kane in the Tunisia game as well as some other games that shows the inconsistency of the people making the decisions at VAR. Although i have to say the ref in the Eng - Tunis game was terrible and not the kind of standard that should be at a world cup. Idk, quite why it's still not working like it should. The NFL have had it for years, yet i dont ever see them having the problems that still plague soccer. Maybe it's teething troubles with the equipment or the adjudicators. But whatever the reason it needs to be sorted out. Mistakes at this level can mean the difference between a win or a defeat. On the whole though i think it's worked pretty well. More penalties have been given in this world cup than any other for quite a while. And many of them came from VAR decisions. But ultimately we must not get totally reliant on VAR. It's the refs job to be competent and manage the game accordingly with minimal mistakes and interruptions. Imo

It is probably an advantage to finish second, the game could be the ultimate dead rubber where both teams are trying to lose. At the moment Belgium are ahead on "fair play" rules, to finish second needs a loss or a draw with two more yellows or a red more than Belgium. It wont be the first "anti-football match.

Yeesh for the most part the South Korean goalie didn't have to stand in the goal, can't believe Germany missed so many shots....Guess I'll be rooting for Belgium also.

This is going to take some time to digest. Worst German team ever. This is so depressing. I have never in my life been so upset about a German team. They are going home in shame...
When they announced that Sane (Man City) wasn't going, I thought it must be some team to leave him out, well he should have been there. Maybe kept too many of the older generation in the team, it is generally a young mans game.

Not seen the Brazil game, i have not seen what Naymar brings to Brazil apart from diving and rolling around faking injuries
The usual rolling about and theatre but he was dispossessed a few times and missed a lot of great chances. My wife is a Liverpool fan so Coutinho is "one of my boys". Naymar will take over from Ronaldo as the player everyone wants to screw up. She was laughing her head off. At times he is a genius he just gets on my wires.

Considering the two teams England and Belgium will be playing in the knockout stages i dont really think it matters all that much. I mean, it's either going to be Japan, Senegal or Columbia. No disrespect to those teams but i'll take any of them at this stage. I'd prefer to avoid Senegal, but it certainly could be worse considering some of the fixtures in other groups. Least Eng v Bel will be a good test for both sides. But this has to be one of the most entertaining world cup finals i've seen in a while. Right now it's almost impossible to predict a winner.

On a side note i can't quite believe Germany are going home. I know that team has nothing one would usually associate with a good German team, like steel, clinical finishing, unity and the ability to grind out a result even when having a bad game. And while when it comes to football, Germany to England will always be "the old enemy" and vice versa. So my natural reaction should be to gloat a little (or even a lot lol) but after witnessing the same thing happen to England 4 years ago i can't help but feel their pain. And no matter how much friendly rivalry there is, a world cup just doesnt feel quite the same without Germany. Having said that, it must sting a little the way Germany bowed out. Loosing to South Korea was just weak. And shows just how disorganised the current German team is. But hey, just my humble opinion.
P.S. I thought Brazil played a lot better today. If they play the way we all know they can play through the rest of the tournament my money is on them.

Just watching it now.
Naymar is a great talent but Coutinho is far more productive and reliable.
Naymar reminds me of Robinho too often flatters to deceive

The Germans don't see England as a rival or old enemy in football, they assume they will win, their rivals are Brazil Italy and Argentina.
