From all of the grinding and squeeling noises going on, I would guess that the crane was over-extended and collapsed...the aerial view looked like the crane base was some distance from the pylon where the Skyhawk was to be mounted
The work of amateurs takes its toll once again. One look at the way the hook was rigged to the lift point raises a lot of questions about their competence. Until the crane let go, was expecting the lift points to give way.

After taking a couple years to restore. A A-4 Skyhawk was being put back on its pedistal in Alameda. The soft ground gave way under the crane. Video taken off KRON 4 NEWS
