What color is "Buff" anyway?
Not the same color as a B-52....

I think Buff is supposed to be some sort of Tan. I've seen that mentioned with some other model kit a long time ago.

I think "Buff" means the natural color of the fabric, which is a very light tan. Years ago a guy who had built a replica Gee-Bee Z described the problem they had in figuring out what color to paint the inside of the cockpit, the walls of which were unpainted fabric. Then an idea hit them: "We'll use unpainted fabric!"
I'd have used canvas, available at an art store, just to make it more durable.
Now, in modern times we do not use unpainted fabric because we need to protect the fabric from the Sun with a coating of aluminum powder. In WWI they seem to have not been worried too much about that because the airplanes were not meant to last very long anyway and the chances of them being damaged and require replacement of the fabric anyway was very high.
By the way, there's a book I have about WWI aviation, "The Canvas Falcons." Absurd name! They did not use canvas! Too heavy and would not conform as well; the material they used was more like a bedsheet.
By the way, the guys who built the Gee Bee Z followed the design too closely. They put an air vent in the middle of the instrument panel, looking like an old fashioned radio speaker. After the first flight the pilot said he felt a bit woozy. The "fresh air intake" was located right behind an exhaust stack! Asking the pilots who flew the originals if they ever felt woozy they replied, "Yes." They moved the fresh air intake to a less authentic location.
