interestingly this may have solved a mystery or a myth. rolling rock beer had a 33 on the label that no one seemed to know the meaning of. in slide 52 of chicago there is a huge sign for pabst blue ribbon beer that lists it is blended 33 to 1. wonder if the 33 on RR meant it was also blended 33:1 ( whatever that means)...but it must have been an important selling point at one time...

Guessing that, in days before precise computerised quality control, that blending helped even out the taste across different batches so the consumer didn't get a bad batch. Presumably there was some science that said 33 is the magic number - any more than that is a waste of resources while any less increases the risk of a bad batch to unacceptable levels.
 
Great pics Jan. During the Depression, artists and photographers were hired by the government to go out among America and paint and take pics. Their efforts were used to decorate numerous government buildings and agencies like all the CCC camps, railway stations. The New Deal really had some great programs.
