Quick question , would the Spanish civil war be considered MTO?

Not really.

I agree. Also I would say the MTO appeared in 1940 that is much later than the Spanish Civil War. By the time, the Spanish had been neutral and had nothing in common with the military operations at the area.

Canopy had gaps, so melted and stretched some clear sprue will cut excess when glue drys

I agree. A pity didn't do that before you had applied the colour.

Agreed. A little care and attention before rushing to paint is always rewarding, though sometimes difficult.

And agree with Wojtek and Andy... can't stress enough how important the prep work is - it can make or break a model (trust me on that!!! )
