I didn't know the roundels on the bottom of RAF aircraft had a white ring. Was that standard markings for ETO planes?

Sure was. The upper wing ones for most of the war had no white. Maybe that's what you're thinking of.

I guess I was. I had rarely looked at aircraft that weren't American. The few pictures I looked at of RAF planes never really showed the undersides. Or I didn't bother to look. I just assumed the wing roundels were the same, top or bottom.
