Don't know if this helps, but the Mustang we see at DX used the "firewall" camouflage pattern, and these guys are normally very accurate with their restoration colour schemes.
The Flypast or Aeroplane article I recalled above was all about the restoration of that particular bird and I do recall that the restoration team tried to get the scheme exactly right as Terry said.
Well that seals the deal for me.

you'll have to forgive me on the shark mouth asits from the Tamiya Mustang III kit for GA Q so wont quite match the original but will look close enough for me.
Fuselage closed up, fit is absolutely fantastic !
engine was installed only because it holds the rather poor exhausts, the only let down on this kit so far.
Engine panels went on pretty well, shame one was not moulded fully, hence the hole on top.
I'll fill this with a blob of glue as its pretty small and should fill easily.
