little more progress yesterday with primer down and rough pre-shading
the past few builds I've painted the insignia over top of the base paint, which with multi layer insignia I sometimes would have the oreo effect to varying degrees
this time I'd thought I'd try with the insignia painted first, fully mask it then I'll do some finer shading then do the Light & Blue Gray

able to get more paintwork done
a couple of the insignia's did not turn out as well as I'd hoped, I will have do some subtle repair & touch ups - particularly the right side fuselage insignia
but overall they turned out fairly well, pretty happy so far

had a little fun with unlaying red stripes on the tail - doing some research found that there are not a lot of photo's of Best's plane (at least what I found), but I did discover the Battle of Midway round table (Battle of Midway RoundTable), along with a profile courtesy of Tullis Aviation Art (SBD-3 Lt. Richard H. 'Dick' Best VB-6 - Tullis Aviation Art Ltd.) who knew and interviewed Best.
some of you might already familiar with those, but thought I'd share

I usually cut my own paint masks and with this one I tried the insignia first then base paint, but I've had more consistent results with doing the base then insignia
everyone is different, but for me found slightly less chance of mask mis-alignment overall with insignia on top of base paint

Not a modeler myself, but whatever it was you were talking about certainly worked. It is coming out beautifully!
