In my castle....
Trying to get the DVD's to work on my dads computer, but nothing works....
I can't remember what I'm using either. So, fellas, what DVD players do you use
and can recommend to download?
 
R/RW is a writable/erasable DVD. Might be something wrong with how it was copyied or it may be a wrong region code, i.e. most United States DVD players can only play Region 1 DVDs.
 
Also check and see if it needs driver updates. Hit up the manufacturer's website and download the latest firmware updates and stuff. As others have said, ensure your drive is set to the right region. And keep in mind that DVD players, like everything else on your PC, is made by mankind and therefore prone to dying for no apparent reason at the worst possible moment.

Also, as a matter of honor, most players refuse to play that Swedish porn crap. Buy Dutch instead.
 
If it's not reacting at all, in other words, if you can hear the deck working, but no sound or image, then the deck itself is probably bust/worn out/ expired. The first thing to be affected is the reader 'lens' and, in general, the darned decks can pack up without warning, especially if they haven't been used in a while. I've just had mine replaced, after thinking it was the software in the Power DVD programme and the Windows Media Player. Now, all works fine, except Swedish porn......

It's for this region, it's a Swedish WWII aviation movie! Not a bl**dy thing happens, no sound, no nothing! Tried the VLC, Quicktime Player....
I've tried NTSC on my computer and it worked just fine.
This is weird!

Oh, and if its a dirty laser lens, run one of those CD cleaners through the drive...its a CD with little brushes on the bottom of it, cleans off the lens. That'll work for a bit.
 
Yep, agree with RA. Could be a dirty lens. So the drive doesn't power up at all when you put the disk in? Can you see the disk in my computer (the DVD drive will change name if it does pick it up). Also try another disk to see if that works.

If it doesn't try cleaning it with a CD lens cleaner and failing that it looks like it is a dead drive and needs replacing (I had to do this with mine at the end of last year).
 
Do you hear the DVD spin?
If it is, you should get an icon in "My Computer" so you can open the DVD.
If autostart is off, you can start VLC and try 'Open disk' from the program-menu.
If it doesn't spin, throw away the DVD player and buy a new one, they're cheap. Cleaning is not recommended, Those brushes do not clean that much, but do damage your lens if you're unlucky. Anyway, it's usually a waste of time.

I agree about the CD lens cleaner discs - they're about as much use as an ash-tray on a motorbike!
Given that other discs play ok, then it'll be the DVD disc at fault. It has been known for 'blank' discs to get through the production cycle. If others don't run, and there is no icon on the screen indicating a disc is ready to play, and especially if the 'control' screen does not show, then it's almost certain the deck is knackered! They aren't that expensive, even a reasonable DVD reader/writer can be had for around £25 to £30 nowadays.
