Robert W. Stephens of St Louis 18 while escorting bombers to Halberstadt in s recent daylight raid, shot down a ME 110 and helped to destroy & ME 410 in a curious manner. When he saw the 410 about to attack a "box" of bombers he got into position to engage the Nazi machine but found on pressing the button that he was out of ammunition. To distract the ME pilot's attention from the bombers Stephens "formated" on him so closely that they almost touched, and he could see the look of bewilderment on the Nazi pilot's face Stephens then "peeled off" and his wing man shot the enemy down. The picture shows 1st Lieut. Stephens (who in civil life is a base-ball professional) with his P-51 "Mustang" the American plane which has been developed through the RAFs appreciation of it, which which now, with an American build Rolls-Royce merlin" engine and long-range petrol tank that can cover a radius of 450 miles over Germany in support of heavy daylight bombers. KNAPP (ABOVE), U.S. ARMY AIR FORCES THUNDERBOLT PILOT IS HALE AND HEARTY AFTER LEARNING WHAT IT FEELS LIKE TO ATTAIN A SPEED OF 14 MILES A MINUTE, OR 840 MILES AN HOUR. IT HAPPENED OVER EMDEN, GERMANY, DURING A U.S. RAID. LT. KNAPP'S THUNDERBOLT FIGHTER WENT INTO A VERTICAL DIVE AT 28,000 FEET. THE CONTROLS "FROZE" AND KNAPP WAS UNABLE TO PULL THE SHIP OUT OF THE DIVE, THE CRAFT LEVELED ITSELF OFF AT 5,000 FEET BUT THE SHIP HAD MADE A SPEED OF 840 M.P.M. ON THE TRIP FROM 28,000 TO 5,000, INTELLIGENCE OFFICERS ESTIMATE. THE THUNDERBOLT'S INSTRUMENTS REGISTER NO MORE THAN 600 MILES AN HOUR, BUT KNAPPIS SPEED WAS SO MUCH GREATER THAN THAT THAT THE PAINT WAS PEELED OFF PARTS OF HIS SHIP. LT.
