Wilhelm Herget was born on June 30, 1910 in Stuttgart.
Before the war he completed his training as a pilot and then served with II. / Zerstorergewader 76. (ZG 76). At that time he flew the twin-engine Messerschmitt Bf-110. In fierce battles on the Western front, he achieved his first successes. During the Battle of Britain he scored 7 victories and at the end of 1940 he had 14 victories to his credit.
In 1941 Herget was transferred to Nachtjagdgeschwader 3 (NJG3) and became Kommandeur der I. Nachtjagdgeschwader 4. He continued to lead it until December 1944. From January 1945 he was trained to fly the new jet fighter, the Messerschmitt Me 262 for Sonderkommision Kleinrath, a test unit. As a result, he ended up with Adolf Galland's Jagdverband 44 in April 1945. He flew with this unit until the end of the war and destroyed 1 enemy aircraft. Herget was eventually credited with 72 victories, of which 57 in night flights and 15 during the day during 700 combat sorties.

Wilhelm Herget died on March 27, 1974 in Stuttgart. Herget, Wilhelm - TracesOfWar.nl
