Belgium Etienne Dufossez 10-05-1940

1745230327222.jpeg

Etienne Eugène Louis Charles Dufossez, born in Sint-Gillis (Brussels) on 21 August 1914, died in Herten (Wellen) on 10 May 1940.On 1 March 1938 Etienne Dufossez starts his training as a military pilot with the 77th Promotion student pilots. He obtained his pilot's license on 14 March 1939 after which he ends up as a fighter pilot with the 5th Squadron, IIIrd Group of the 2nd Regiment (5/III/2) based in Nivelles. The IIIrd Fighter Group (5th and 6th Squadron) was still equipped with Fairey Fox (Hispano), a completely outdated aircraft, certainly as a fighter aircraft. On 9 May 1940 six aircraft from 5/III/2 arrived at Diest-Schaffen from where they had to participate in an exercise above the Beverlo training ground the next day. When the general alarm was announced for the umpteenth time in the middle of the night of 9 to 10 May 1940, not everyone was convinced of the seriousness of the situation. There had been several alarms in the months before and some thought that it would cool down again this time without blowing. Moreover, there was a morning mist so that take-off was not immediately possible. Captain Boussa, CO of 5/III/2, had a lock forced to get the planes of his squadron out of the hangar and around 5 a.m. they took off with destination the auxiliary airfield of Vissenaken near Tienen. The rest of 5/III/2 came from Nivelles to Vissenaken and 6/III/2, at that time in Knokke-Zoute for shooting exercises over the sea, also flew to Vissenaken in great haste. From Vissenaken, 5/III/2 flew a first mission with nine Foxes. They took off at 08:37 in three platoons of three to intercept German bombers, flew over Goetsenhoven airfield and followed the railway line from Brussels to Liège. Between Tienen and Sint-Truiden the first two platoons were attacked by Messerschmitt Bf 109Es of 3./JG 27. Both 1Sgt Charles Detal and Lt Dufossez were shot down above Wellen. 1Sgt Detal was able to bail out of his plane but was badly burned. He recovered from his wounds, escaped from occupied Belgium and joined the RAF. From the third platoon Lt Albert Brel was also shot down shortly afterwards near Montenaken. Lt Dufossez was able to bail out of his Fox O-123 but his parachute did not open. Residents of Herten saw the pilot fall, he landed near the Drienoothoeve in the Drienootstraat.During the air battle Lt Dufossez is said to have shot down a German aircraft and some sources mention the victim as Feldwebel Hoppe. According to some sources Hoppe had to abandon his damaged aircraft, other sources mention that he was killed. The only German pilot named Hoppe killed on 10 May 1940 was Fw Walter Hoppe of I./JG 20 but he was killed in the Netherlands. His unit was escorting Ju 53/3m transport aircraft to Rotterdam and The Hague and he was hit by Dutch anti-aircraft fire. His aircraft fell in the river Waal, north of 's Hertogenbosch, clearly far outside the area of operations of the Belgian Foxes. Despite consulting various sources we could not find any further details of the possible victim of Lt Dufossez, also in 'The Battle of France : Then and now' no loss of JG 27 is recorded before 10 May 1940.
