In 1943, many families had to leave Vlissingen again, now with destinations in West Brabant. On 20 August of that year, the city suffered heavily during a bombardment carried out by 12 Mitchells, with a completely Dutch crew. They caused enormous devastation in the city with their 'five-hundred-pounders'. Twelve civilian casualties were to be mourned during this attack by compatriots.
