Following a demonstration of a Selbst-fahrlafette auf Lorraine-Schlepper for Hitler on 23 May 1942, a decision was made that all 160 Lorraine-Schlepper that were still available were to be converted to Selbstfahrlafetten: 60 with 10.5 cm le.F.H., 40 with 15 cm s.F.H.13, and 60 with 7.5 cm Pak 40. Hitler needed several of these s.F.H.13 Sfl. extremely urgently for a special action by Rommel. It was to be immediately determined how long it would take to complete the necessary assembly, because special value was placed on making these weapons available. This project was to be completed as an accelerated special action. During a conference with Hitler on 4 June 1942, it was recorded that 30 s.F.H.13 were to be immediately mounted on Lorraine-Schlepper with the fastest delivery time.
Design and assembly of the 30 Lg.s.F.H.13 (Sfl.) auf Lorraine-Schlepper were completed by Alkett in Berlin-Borsigwalde in June 1942. The 15 cm s.F.H.13 L/17 fired a high-explosive shell to a maximum range of 6200 meters at its maximum muzzle-velocity of 281 meters/second. In the self propelled mounting, the gun centerline was 1.850 meters above the ground. Elevation was restricted to an arc of -0 to +14 degrees and traverse through an arc of 7 degrees left to 7 degrees right. The gun was aimed using a normal artillery Rundblickfern-rohr 32 dial sight. A 7.92 mm M.G.34 and two 9 mm M.P.38 were also carried for close-in and antiaircraft defense.
The 10 mm thick frontal armor and 8 mm side armor was only capable of keeping out lead bullets fired by small arms and shell fragments. Including the crew of four and eight rounds of ammunition, the total combat weight was 8.50 metric tons. Overall length was 4.400 meters, width 1.850 meters, and height 2.200 meters. A 70 horsepower Delahaye engine propelled the vehicle at a maximum speed of 35 kilometers/hour at a maximum range of 135 kilometers with a full tank of 110 liters of fuel. While its sustainable road speed of 20 kilometers/hour was acceptable, its sustainable cross-country speed of only 8 kilometers/hour was too low to keep up with the Panzers it was to support. Other automotive capabilities were 30 cm ground clearance, 85 cm fording depth, 57 cm step climbing of 180 cm trench crossing, and 24 degrees grade climbing.
