P-51D Mustang (OS-G, serial number 44-13728) of the Experimental Scouting Force (SFX), with a B-17 Flying Fortress at Podington. The underscore to the 357th Fighter Squadron code "OS" indicates its asignment to the SFX but serviced by the 357th FS. The SFX was formed at Steeple Morden with both fighter pilots and bomber pilots who had completed their tours and volunteered to fly fighters. 44-13728 was assigned to Captain Ernest L Burdge who had served with the 92nd Bomb Group.

So OS G

The Scout Force Experimental squadron were maintained as 354FS, 357FS and 358FS "E" Flights - all 355th FG ground crews and a mixture of 355th FG pilots TDY with former 1BD B-17 drivers like Burge. Budd Peaslee was king until SFX deemed a success and spun off 1st, 2nd and 3rd SF with Peaslee running 1st SF til EOW. 2nd SF organized at Steeple Moden/355th. My father wearing two hats as 354FS CO and 355FG Exec, also performed check rides on every bomber pilot before clearing for assignment to 2SF operations.

Man, if you're Germany, you KNOW you're screwed once you get a flock of ex bomber pilots flying Mustangs out in front of ~1,000 heavy bombers and they're not even the escort.

Well the Scout Force concept was excellent in theory and execution.

The 2SF attached to 355th had two missions notable for making a diference. On 26 November, 1944 a seven ship section stopped doing BDA over Misburg to jump 50+ JG 301 Fw 190s attacking 2AD B-24s. JG 301 was part of ~200-225 LW fighters of JG1, JG 6 and JG301 that attacked from E and NE of Misburg. The 357FS and 354FS intercepted and blunted the attack, but the balance of JG 301 snuck in from the east and hammered the trailing box of 491 and 445BG in one pass. In all 20 B-24s were lost. The 2 SF intercepted the repeat attack. credited with 5-2-2 FW 190s, but more importantly prevented more losses. Bill Whalen got three, former bomber pilot Whitlow got one. IIRC Erich lost a cousin on this mission.

Whalen was also in the middle of a major fight when 2SF leader John Brooks and Whalen bounced 50+ Bf 109s forming up near the Rally Point south of Magdeburg. The second flight of 2SF stayed above to provide top cover. Brooks (former 44th BG) and Walen each got 2-0-0 and 2-1-0 respectively. Whalen became the only Scout Force Ace on this mission.
 
P-51B 8 kills D-Day stripes

Edit drgondog post below: North American P-51B-5 43-6559 (355th FS, 354th FG, 9th AF) crashed from unknown cause near Reims, France Aug 25, 1944. MACR 8492. Pilot bailed out and returned to duty.
