With Karl...

Considering various RNZAF and RAAF options, but time is always so limited. Keira Lily's due end Jan too.

If I can enter at all, it will be something that can be built out of box to my standard of detail - thinking an RAAF Spitfire Mk.VIII (Eduard 1:72) or 488 (NZ) Sqn. Buffalo Mk.I (Special Hobby 1:72)

EDIT: My wife says go the Buffalo :)
A word of advice from someone who has been to battle and back three times with an expectant mother, listen to her the first time. If she says Buffalo, it best be a Buffalo.

Same boat Mike,
Yea, I used to be closer to 99% but they built a Hobby Lobby in Mountain Home about 30 min away. They don't carry much in the way of models and/or modeling tools but do carry the basics plus airbrush-type stuff. So I can stop there and get basic needs and every month they put out a 20-30% off coupon

Just bought me a G model P-38. Now to source the decals. I have been looking and searching the internet but I get the feeling the decals I require do not exist in 1:48 scale. Tail markings 32204 in yellow,, nose markings 147 and named Miss Virginia also in yellow.
Best I can see it was fella named Rex Barber who currently is credited for shooting down Yamamoto not Thomas Lanphier.

Ive got three choices...….Special Hobby CAC 12 Boomerang "early version"(1/72 scale)), Tamiya A6M5c Zero Fighter (1/48 scale) or sit on the beach and watch the traffic.

For the last one, just make sure you take the required 6 pictures.

Jeff, I'll take a look at what I have.

Might be something here..... P-38 Lightning by Rian Jones (Hasegawa 1/48)
Look here for some decals, I make out 1/48th scale.... (10) P-38 Lightning at War
something else.... https://www.eduard.com/store/out/media/1174.pdf

Excellent.
I have been to the Kagero site and I must be an idiot as I cannot see how to order the decals or if they are even still available.
The Eduard ones look nice.
I will have to try to find these.I have some time so hopefully things will work out.

Thanks for the leads,

Jeff

Jeff, the Kagero decals usually come included in a book. I have these possibilities for you and am not sure they can help but all options are yours if you want them.

I have the Academy P-38E kit and am not using the decals below. They depict an aircraft based in the Aleutians but squadron is not identified. With a bit of digging, I;m sure we could find out.

I have the below Sky Models sheet but will be using the HV-C scheme and insignia decals.

There are a few that are are PTO schemes but the call-outs are suspect (Sky are not known for accuracy):

"P-38L" Pacific Prowler:

"P-38L" Geronimo II. (Note that the profile shows the streamlined engine intake. The L had the larger vertical intake)

"P-38H-1" Impossible Inee

There are several others but they all have the later J/K/L engine cowl. I won't show these for now but happy to post these if you are interested.

Thanks Bill.
I have sourced the yellow tail numbers from my left over bits bag.
The white 147 and kill markings should be quite doable. It will be the Miss Virginia that is problematic, then again finding a virginia is every man's quest is it not?

Jeff

Wishing I could have lead you straight to the decals. Custom printing like my YANKEE DOODLE DANDY would be around 35 Aussie dollars, 25 US, plus post from a printer here.

If worse comes to worse I will leave the Miss Virginia off for now but keep my eyes open. I know that will make it not quite historically right but I will also know it was not for lack of trying.
Mother Superior would have my you know whats on a platter if I spent that kind of money for something so simple, tiny and in the big picture, insignificant. (her thoughts not mine)

Cheers,

Jeff

As I mentioned, I have many kits for this. I'm going to start with this...

...and using Rising Decals "Dying Sun Pt. III", make this...

If things go quickly with this and I get off my keester and order a replacement canopy, I can start over on a Captured Ki-43 that I started in another group build or maybe it was a S2F, I dunno. I also have a Captured Ki-45 "Nick" on the same decal sheet

Works for me.

So, a question on the theme: Would we include US aircraft pre-Pearl Harbour? I know it says 1937 but there really wasn't a PTO yet as far as the US was concerned.
