Its that time of year when Tony and I disappear off into the wild blue yonder....Ok, Duxford !...to get our fill of piston powered Warbirds at the Flying Legends airshow.

Travelled up at sparrow f*rt on the friday morning for the arrivals day, ready to make a full weekend out of this airshow. We'd booked into a hotel about 20 miles away from the airfield so that there would be no hassle or stress when the airfield closed each night and we wqouldn't get caught up in the rat race of peeps trying to get the exit before eveyone else.

We recommend that anyone doing this airshow does the same thing as generally, once the mass flypast finishes, most peeps make a run for their cars and get caugfht in the traffic jams. We where able to bimble about looking at the statics and the stalls while the airfield emptied, then we casually made our way back to the car and left. Stress free !

The weather wa reasonable on the friday, was an absolute scorcher on the saturday, was supposed to rain on the sunday, but the rain never came...and it was another scorcher. The clouds looked remarkably like the ones you see in the olkd B&W pics from WW2 and the whole mood, especally when the 8 Spits, 1 Hurricane and the Buchon were flying could have been lifted from the summer of '44. absolute magic !

I'll start off with the flightline walk shots. Here you get to go 'airside' to take pics off all the display A/C from a distance of about 50 feet...making sure nor to step off the tarmac onto the grass. Then later on, I'll post some ground to air shots. Tony will be adding some of his fantastic shots when he's back from work.

First batch is the '51's. Not as many as in prevous years but still an impressive sight to see on the duxford turf.

Next up are the three Skyraiders. Its not until you look down the throat of a Skyraider, that you realise just how big this things are !. With that huge radial at the front end, powering that massive prop, they just absolutely dominate their turf wherever they park up.

Then we have the two Sea fury's. I have to say that the highlight of the whole weekend, was watching that blue Fury, motoring down at an incredible rate of knots, in abeautifull curved approach onto the display line, accompanied by a sound track that still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, just looking at the pictures !. The silver one was doing a great 'acro' routine directly in front of the crowd while the blue essentially just did the equivilant of continual sneak pass's to the left and right, right down on the deck.

Not sure if you'll see it hiding by the Hawk, but if you look closely, you'll see the dimuntive Polikarpov I16 'Rata. How anything this ugly flys is beyond me, but it does have some redeeming aspects. First off is the noise it makes. Its staggering to believe but that radial under the aerodynamic :D front end makes mnore noise than a Dakota at take off power !. It doesnt seem to rev fast but crickey, what a racket it makes. Its aslo an extremely strong little plane, cleared would you believe to 31,000 feet !!!!...and with an open cockpit to boot. Incredible. The undercarriage is wound up...yes wound, not pumped !....by about 200 turns on a handle inside the cockpit. You can see the retracting wires in the pics

This thing makes the word agricultural look sexy !

Next in line from I16 is the Curtiss Warhawk from the Amicale Jean Salis Curtiss collection, the Bearcat and the Corsair. I've got a good cllip of the Corsair taxying by, stopping then folding and unfolding its wings. A short while later, she was in the hangar on jacks while some hydraulic pipes where replaced. she was up and flying for the afternoon.

We had three Yak 3's at this years show. Boy, were they fast. They just seemed to rip through the air with no apparent effort from the clockwork under the hood.

Then we step into a Hawker patch, some from back a few years to the age of the biplane fighters and bombers. Here we have the Hawker Hurricane, Demon, Nimrod, Fury, Hind and finish off with the Gloster Gladiiator

Parked up next to the Gladiator is the unmistakable shape of the Lysander.

And then on to some of the trainers / advanced trainers. Here we have a Magister, Jungmeister, Jungmann, and the very dainty, but surprisingly agile, Arrow Active. The two PT22 hadnt arrived when we did the walk on the Sauturday, hence no static shots, sorry :(.

The last little beaut is a Mew Gull. Yup, its a racer and then some ! This just oozed class and speed...and looked pretty as well !

Not including the Skyraiders and the B17, big stuff was pretty scarce this year. No B25's (we had three last year), and no Invader(she's up for sale) . we were also down on B17 Pink Lady as she has no been grounded for an indefinite period as a museum peice. what we did have displaying this year, was Dak, Ju52 and Me108 and the BBMF (allthough the Lanc didn't land this year.

Thats enough of the statics. On with the action shots.

The general flying displays were very well thought out and provided the best range of photo oportunities for some time. Helped of course by the weather and which for once, the sun seemed to be in the right place at the right time !. Foir some reason, this year, the Mustang tail chase routed to the right hand side of the airfield instead of the normal left hand circuit. this meant that there was little or no opportunity to get top side shots as they all went away from the display line  However, then noise made up for it !

Above all however, this year was again a safe show, with no incidents.

And I learnt a lot from the French commentator. It seems that all these years I've been wrong...its a C46 Dakota !!!...and French pilots won the Battle of Britain (Wot...no Tom Cruise :D )... and the list goes on.

Fortunately, the end of the crowd line we normally go to, wasnt in earshot of his inane babblings on. We just suffered, when we went into the Friends of Duxford tent for a cuppa or two during the day.

Thanks for the comments guys, much appreciated...says he , sat in shorts at home smelling of after sun,cos its too pianfull to wear anything else on account of getting frazzled to a cinder by the non apearance of rain at Duxford. Pink ?...who said that....Lobster thermidor colour more like !.

Wait till you see Tony's pic...its a real corker !

Also at FL was a goodly selection of large scale flying models. These weren't flown at this show but are being put through thier paces on the 25 of this month at Duxford.

First impressions...that corsair is absolutely bl**dy brilliant. Even the pilot has that 'fighter ace' look about him.

Second impressions...WTF !...a Peacemaker in the making !!!!
