I am interested in german aircraft turrets from ww2 , especially the HDL 151/20 A2 and the HDL 151 / 15 , the first one was used on JU 188 the second one on teh FW 200 condor, BV 138, DO 24/26 , ME 232 etc. They were equipped with a MG 151 20 mm or 15 mm and had the REVI E2A gunsight , it was controlled by one man sitting on a folding seat. Early types of this had no protection , the only thing was on the A2 a pansarglas infront of the gunners face , later on, at least the 15 turret had steel protection both around the gunner under the view, and 2 steel plates in front , with a small aiming hole for the gunsight.
I am restoring both of these turrets and looking for parts and pics.
American turrets did. I've got a reprint of AFM-20, a gunners file on operating , and some maintenance on the turrets. In most cases it doesn't say how thick, but in the Emerson nose turret ( B-24 ) it was 5/8 inch, plus some bulletproof glass.
I have the complete panzer protection for the HDL 151 / 15 , it contains of 3 parts , on is divided so the upper part can slide when moving the MG up or down, in this you can see the hole for teh REVI gunsight . Also there is a bent plate wich is attached to the lower frame work protecting the gunner inside the aircraft. The thickness is 8 mm, special steel!
You have very interesting and challenging projects there Undu. Your photos are excellent and have identified the grip I got recently. The armour is from a He177. Do you have any pictures of it inside a turret? Thanks, Ian.
Thanks! I'll see if I can get the piece the same way around as your picture to compare. The armour came from this dig: Heinkel He177 | Aviation Archaeology
