Harriet was the victim of a misconception that lingered for awhile in the early days: wouldn't an airplane be more efficient if wing and tail BOTH provided lift? She was flying a (I think) Bleriot rigged with the tail as a lifting surface, and when she entered a descent and the aircraft picked up speed, the increased lift on the tail kept steepening the descent until the plane tucked under and pitched her right out of the cockpit. No harness or parachute of course.Post # 2193 - Harriet Quimby - American aviator, the first woman to fly across the English Channel in April 1912. Killed in a flying accident July 1912, age 39
