Just like the "12 O'Clock High" intro and Eisenhower's '51 return to D-Day beaches ... and service folk forever, returning to the sites where they tested their mortality.
(... though I have NO interest in returning to the Mekong Delta, highlands, or trail. Saw ALL I EVER needed in '63 & '67!)
I saw enough of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia in '63-4 and '67.
Worked as an auto writer '70s-05, and went on several rugged Land Rover Camel Trophy competitive expeditions to New Guinea, Turkey, Central American jungle and Spanish trials. They tried to set up an event traversing the 'Ho Chi Minh trail' but it was stillborn, due to continued unrest between countries involved.
I would have gone, only having toured @ 400Kt and leaving some small reminders of my visit.
In '51, my AF Major Dad was on Ike's SHAPE staff in Paris and revered him. We lived in a hotel in the shadow of the Eiffel tower, and one morning Dad rushed home, bundled Mom and boys into our '47 Dodge, and we joined a small convoy heading to Normandy. Eisenhower was heading back to the States to accept the Presidential candidate nomination and was making a last visit.
IIRC, only a small group of about 30+ staff was present, and we were standing behind photogs. (Note his modest ribbons)
About '67 when on TAD to DC as a Naval escort/aide/uniformed photo op, I noted an assignment to take some documents to Eisenhower, then retired to his Gettysburg farm ... and asked for the job. Drove up, he came to the door w/o pomp or staff and invited me in for tea while he looked them over. Asking about my background, I mentioned our French encounter, and Dad's admiration.
Departing, the President gave me his SHAEF desk set with enameled badge, which became Dad's prize memento.
