So I thought maybe to simply edit my intro thread to add the names of people we could ID as the experts. If any of these folks object to being identified as such, I would simply remove the name.

Michael Hope (Propellers) and Engineman (WW2 Engines) would be examples. I could throw my name in for the DH Mosquito too but it's more on the technical side.
I think the real question would be how and who will determine if someone is expert enough to be called an expert. If we don't do that carefully we'll probably get in all kinds of trouble.
For instance, I remember someone who thought he was an expert on P39s and there were probably some who believed that ;)

I would nominate E EwenS for naval matters.

I need a smiley that conveys both "agree" and "freakin' hilarious".

He was, however, a gentleman. He never posted maliciously despite much written abuse sent his way.

And he did have a lot of information, and brought much more from forum members. We learned that rapid repositioning of armor and British cockpit heaters was a non problem.

Member nominations would be fairest.

I think simple suggestions as were made above with the member's link. When the member sees the nomination he can object or qualify it.

I agree. Would be nice to organise this.

So as I said, I think this should not be an initiative of the forum team. We are meant to be impartial and if we would be choosing experts, it could be seen as favouritism to certain users. So if we are going to do this, it should be a community effort.

Having said that, we could provide technical assistance of course.

There will be challenges. Keeping it up to date is one of them, so there should be, what we call in the IT business, a data owner. So someone will have to volunteer for that ( and probably should be prepared to get the same flak as we from the team get regularly ;) )

If you guys think all of this is worth the effort, go for it.

What's a data owner and what does it entail. It's sounding more complicated than I intended it to be.
Basically someone responding to keep the stuff up to date.

To elaborate on that:

- Not everybody would like to be in such a list, so you cannot just put them there. So someone should be responsible to ask that.
- not everyone will agree on the expertise of others. You will get discussions and butthurt people. So someone should have the power to make decisions.

That's what the "data owner" should do.

The other way would be just to start a thread and let it go freely, but I guess that that would become a mess quickly.
