I was 5 days in Rheden, a little village just north of Arnhem. Here is the Posbank, one of the nicer places in the Netherlands, part of the Veluwe. A good time to test my new camera. I found that I now use my 50mm mostly, because the old kitlens 18-55 I use is not up to the job. While the 50mm gives great and sharp images with this body, the kitlens is just not good enough. Any suggestions as to replace that is welcome. I'm wondering if I should buy the 15-85 or 18-135 from Canon (the 17-50 seems to be great, but is rather expensive) or maybe is there a good Sigma lens that I should buy?

Regarding a lens, my first Nikon DSLR came with a Nikon 18 - 55 mm lens, and a Sigma 70 - 300mm lens (with macro) at f4 - f5.6, and image stabilisation.
I found it a touch too slow, in auto-focus, for most airshow work, although overall it performed reasonably, so I now use a Nikon 50 - 300mm lens on my other Nikon body.
But for general use, and considering the low price (around £85 to £95 in the UK), it was very good, with minimal 'fall off' at the frame extremities, no noticeable 'noise' in normal use, and nice, clear, sharp images.
Pity your camera is Canon, otherwise you could have the Sigma lens from me !
 
Thanks Terry. I've got a good 75-300 lens from Canon which is rather good. Of course the L version is much better but they cost 3 times more. I am looking for a more wide angle lens. Up unil now I used the kitlens 18-55 II from Canon, but as I said, when I compare it to my fixed 50mm Prime lens, it is very bad. I think I will look for either a 15-85 or a 18-135 from Canon. Not sure how they perform though. Another candidate is te EF-24 STM fixed lens. Until I buy one, I think I'll use the 50mm for normal photography. It'll be a bit strange, but a nice challenge as well.

I went from the kit 18-55 Canon to the 15-85 this year. Pretty handy lens I find, picked it up second hand for around 1/2 price of new but hardly used. Really enjoyed it, the extra range over the kit lens is useful, I find I rarely used by telephoto anymore which really helps. All the recent shots in my photo thread are with the 15-85. Still using it on the 400D body though as I haven't upgraded the body yet - will do it next year once I'm qualified and have some spare cash...
 
What lenses have you got Hugh?

I've been looking at second hand 17-85's but I also read that this lens breaks quite often. The 15-85 seems to be better but is much more expensive. Still looking a a 18-135. Seems to be a great range, but image quality might be less.
 
You all know this thing in your country that every tourist sees, but you, inhabitant of the country never saw? I have that with Kinderdijk. It's a world heritage landscape, protected by UNESCO. It's only 15 minutes by car from my house and I never even visited it. Well, today I redeemed myself.

Kinderdijk is very much Holland. It is more Holland than the rest of Holland together. It is windmills for pumping water, how Dutch can you get? It's a symbol for existance, for without it and similar constructions, The Netherlands would never have existed. The oldest windmill is from about 1560 and it is still there, only in the 1920 were the mills partly replaced by steam and electricity, the Mills were still backup until the 1990's of the last century when modern pumps were installed. It's one of our greatest tourist attractions, millions of Americans, Chinese, Japanese and people from other nationalities visit the place to see the famous Dutch windmills. Here a short selection of the 300 photo's I took today. I'm still only half way through the set.
