I would like to know what was thinking the guy with the white robes of the visit.
He would have been honorable to receive such noble guests :)

"33rd International Eucharistic Congress attracted Catholic pilgrims from around the world. It marked the first time a Catholic Cardinal set foot on the Philippines – Philadelphia Cardinal Dennis Joseph Cardinal Dougherty (1865-1951), who formerly served as Bishop of Nueva Segovia (1903–1908) and Jaro (1908–1915).

Easily the most colorful delegation was from Japan, attending its first pilgrimage outside Japan since freedom of religion in was guaranteed by the Meiji Constitution (明治憲法) which was proclaimed on Feb. 11, 1889.

The Japanese delegation made a point of wearing regional costumes of various territories in the Empire of Japan: ●Kuril Islands, ●Taiwan (臺灣), ●Karafuto (樺太庁, South Sakhalin), ●Kwantung Leased Territory, ●Korea (朝鮮), ●Shandong, ●South Seas Mandate and ●Manchuria.

Provindentially, the 5-day Congress started on Wednesday, Feb. 3, the 322nd anniversary of the deathday of Dom Justo Ukon Takayama (高山右近, 1552 Osaka-1615 Manila) – identified by Fr. Repetti as "Justo Ukón-dono Tacayawa.""

It is not widely known but Japan had a significant Christian population.

On February 19, 1937, IJA Kawamura Unit returns in triumph from North Manchuria after ten-month mission.
This unit seems to have fought the Battle of Saipan in June, 1944.

IJA airmen didn't like the Ki-49 so much as the Ki-21.
One of the reasons is its nickname "Donryu" as "Don" means slow and heavy in Japanese slang.
Unreliable engines (as opposed to those of the Ki-21) and heavier equipment as selfsealing fuel tanks, more and heavier defensive armament, some armour and bullet proof windscreens surely weren't a good combo.

Too few numbers with a bad timing, I think the Ki-49 is kind of underrated.

Ki‑49 Model 2 Otsu of the 105th Kyoiku Hiko Rentai is having its port engine maintained, with roughly applied camouflage on the previously natural metal uppersurfaces.

A formation of 95th Sentai Ki-49s flies over Luzon Strait (more commonly known to Japanese pilots as Bashi Channel) between Formosa and Luzon, the body of water connecting the Philippine Sea with the South China Sea in the western Pacific. This photograph was taken on 19 November 1944, when the unit was relocating to Clark Field. Note that the slanting and combat bands of the 1st Chutai Ki‑49 Model 2 Otsu in the foreground do not wrap around the entire fuselage.

The Ki-49 that transferred Gen Terashima's 2nd Army staff officers from Pinrang to Morotai to sign the surrender was painted overall white with green crosses as per Allied instructions, which also stipulated that aircraft with tail guns were to have them replaced with windsocks – as can just be seen here. This Ki‑49 is a Model 2 Otsu with multiple exhausts and no spinners.

An early production Model 1 'Helen' of the Hamamatsu school takes off on another training flight.

All pics of the Ki-49 are from the Ki-49 units book by George Eleftheriou.

Very interesting, with some first hand accounts by crew members of a little known japanese plane (at least in the west)

The fiscal year in Japan begins from April.

Japan's national budget for the fiscal year 1937 cut 10% from the previous year.
Prewar Japanese politicians have good dignity with a nice hat.
