Wilhelm Keitel accepting the French surrender from Charles Huntzinger, Compiègne, France, 22 June 1940.

Not quite in Compiègne, but not far from it, in a clearing called Rethondes, in the middle of a forest 4 kilometers east of the city.

The train car where the ceremony is taking place is the one where the German plenipotentiaries signed the armistice on November 11, 1918, in the exact same spot ! This train car was preserved nearby, under the name "Wagon de l'Armistice".

To Huntziger's left is Vice-Admiral Le Luc (Navy), to his right is General Bergeret (Air Force). It is 6:50 PM...

Huntziger was to die 17 months later in an aerial crash.

The oil cooler, wrapped around the propeller reduction gear, is clearly visible. This arrangement was totally outdated by 1939
Later models (Ki-43-II), like the Ki-43-IIb, often had a single, larger oil cooler located inside the carburetor duct after it was enlarged to accommodate the new cooler.
