Very nice work there Cory, and I like the display plinth. Those blue 'shapes' are known as 'Bluishconfusus', designed to puzzle the **** out of us non-educated types !!
 
The stand is a very cool idea and a very unique way to mount the aircraft. Wonder if you could convert them to optical fiber cable and shine a light into the plane and in effect light it up? And also a really nice job on the build
 
I recall a model similar to yours. The guy put leds in the engine, cockpit, anti-collision, landing lights and cannon (different colors too) had two different colors in the engine to simulate low power, high power and after burner. the stand was a control panel in effect where he could control all lights plus a small speaker which made appropriate sounds.
 
Here's another long term project I've just finished. Not from WW II, but, a neat little airplane. 1/72 scale testors T-45. This model depicts the prototype for the US Navy trainer version of the BAE hawk. I like to leave the model sit at least a week between colors or masks so I've been at this one for a while.
