This reminded me a little of my brother, who lives in the States and has done for quite a while. One of the things he did before he moved to Illinois, was to volunteer at a horse sanctuary.

One of the money raising events they did was a cross country ride with a BBQ and entertainment when they reached the end. It was an area where there were a lot of very wealthy people and the horses and equipment they came with was absolutely top draw, very, very expensive and some just tried to outdo the others.

Kens way of making a quiet protest on this extravagance, was to ride a mule. As he put it, he always arrived, the mule never had any issues and sometimes he helped out the more flashy riders.
