WD-40!!!!! Invented to wipe down Atlas Ballistic Missiles. They could not be painted because they were flexible stainless steel. Even the national insignia flaked off the LOX tank. And they got wet due to the LOX load. So they needed something to wipe them down and displace the moisture. A guy in San Diego tried 39 compounds and No. 40 worked.
