Cool pics syscom and Lucky. Syscom, I'm going to try to get back there a lot now that I know where it is. There are still a lot of places around here I do not know about so as I find out about places I am on the road on the weekends to find them.

Good pics! I grew up with a small HO layout. Miss it sometimes. I plan on doing another one in the future, maybe when my son get s old enough. Favorite company would be Rock Island. I love the red and black schemes that was on there engines for years.
I also want to see a Big Boy in person. I believe there is still one around Omaha at a union Pacific museum.

Have you ever thought of looking for a model railroad club in your area? This way you are getting to use a ready made layout.
Have you ever been to the Illinois Railroad Museum in Union IL.? That is north of Chicago between I-90 I-94. That is a great place to see real RR equipment. They have a bunch that is in running condition. They don't have a Big Boy, but they do have a UP turbine set. Unfortunately the turbine is long gone.

Route of the Rock. Yep, I remember when was young in the 80's, seeing C.N.W railroad operating old Rock Island engines still in the blue paint scheme, although the paint was faded, you could still see make out the design, and I remember seeing Route of the Rock on the side of some of the engines.

There are several ways to find a model railroad club.
The simplest is to go to a local hobby shop that has a large model railroad selection and then ask the sales people and/or store owner. If there is a local club, they will be buying stuff here.
Another was is to look in current and back issues of Model Railroader and Trains for club train shows and sales. This can also be done now online.
There are individuals with large layouts that will have a group of 10 to 20 normally people to come over and operate on their home layouts. These are harder to find out about as they "advertise" only by word of mouth. Sometimes these layouts are open to the public for local model railroad conventions. That can be a way to make contact.

I also "belong" to a private group. My firend has a large basement layout of the Boston Maine RR set in 1954. He has enlarged his basement twice so he could expand the layout. That is dedication.

I also enjoy the model railroads, H0 scale. When the time comes and I move back to Sweden (have promised my parents to do that in a few years time, after my dads heart problem), me and a couple of friends are gona build a H0 layout, covering east, midwest and west of the US. Even though I have several favorite US railroads, Milwaukee Road has moved up to the #1 spot and that's the railroad that I'll do, my friends will do the Erie-Lackawanna and Rio Grande....I think!
