Used mostly for hauling ballast to and from worksites. Also used for "stone trains". In the autumn, when the leaves come tumbling down, they come down on tracks. too. The pile up of leaves makes the tracks slippery (dangerous). We'd send out consists of a bunch of stone cars and engines to just "polish the rails". The weight and heat crushed and burned off the goo from the leaves.
