Here's how I finished mine, following info and photos from Wojtek showing the "silver pearl" type coating. Painted with silver enamel, with a drop or two of gloss white in the mix.

Initially MiG-21 PF and PFM weren't painted at all but just protected with a clear gloss coat. During overhauling these could be coated with either a special paint that was silver but of a pearl tone or later with the silver-aluminium coat.

Nice and very quick
I'd already had the cockpit built and the fuselage buttoned up.
Built the lower wings then added the uppers and joined them to the fuselage today with the tail and rudder.
Lastly i added the upper cowl parts.

Once you get past all the small fiddly bits this goes together quickly due to a great fit of the sub assemblies.
