another title I surely have enjoyed. through all the text it appears the Germans were on top of developing air to ground attack techniques - being in the forefront of this ~ a spendy book

Much like my strange love of French Pre-Dreadnaughts I find the early "Flying Machines" fascinating. When the designers were still sorting out what works, this thing is so strange it must work. Must have been a brute to fly.

I agree, from what I understand the layout was supposed minimize engine out yawing. It probably did accomplish that, but it made non emergency flying difficult. Both on this version and the land based Gotha I.
There were defiantly some interesting configurations tried out!

And we think of composite structural construction as a modern phenomenon. Der Wahlfisch ("the whale") had molded fuselage halves of "engineered composite wood product", wood fibers in a polymer-like "glue" cured in a mold under high temperature and pressure. Your original stressed skin construction.
