Today, I shot on the RLM 75 after some preshading. Having gone this far, I realized I forgot a couple of things, namely, the nav lights, which are just molded into the wing plastic, should be replaced with clear parts that I'll need to scratch build, and the RLM 75 should have been extended to form a solid background for the white Balkenkreuzen on the fuselage. All will be easily attended to for the next update.

I found this subject to be excellent practice for my mottling since much of it will be covered in a hastily applied black anyway. I'm happy with it so far in that it appears better than some of my past attempts which turned out much less subtle and too consistent in density and size.

Thanks again everyone. The last couple of days say the nav lights and drop tanks finished and the RLM 74 and Future shot on.

Starting with the nav lights, both port and startboard wing tip lights were carved out of the gray plastic and replaced with pieces of clear sprue shaped to the contour of the wing. Before gluing these to the wing tips, tiny holes were drilled and filled with a dab of green or red paint.

The landing light on the underside of the wing received a circular piece of of bright furnace duct tape followed by a bulb made of clear stretched sprue that had been held near a candle flame. This picture is taken before the clear lens was applied.

The RLM 74 was sprayed on freehand in a standard factory splinter scheme. RLM 74 was also added to the 75 mottling to finish off the vertical surfaces and the 75 cross background was masked and applied on both sides of the fuselage. After curing overnight, I applied a coat of Future to prepare for the decals. The sequence of finish from here on will be to next add the decals (patches of RLM 76 were also painted on the underside where the wing crosses will go) and then paint the undersides and vertical surfaces with black, slightly lightened and sprayed as if quickly applied in the field around the markings. The 9K and MN code decals will need to be home made, as will the white 420314 WNr. I may chose to forego the latter and make the black spray over it but I'll give it a go first. After the black is applied, another coat of Future will be applied to seal everything and then it will be on to the fiddley bits. Note that the RLM 74 appears rather green in these pics, not so in real life.

Finally, here are two pics of the finished drop tank assemblies ready to be installed. As you can see from the last batch of pics, I've severely weathered these, creating some dents, scratches and mud splatters. The warning stencils were scrounged from spares. With both red and black lettering available, I decided to keep things interesting and make one of each.

That's it for now. The next update will hopefully feature a succesful home made decal application.

Wonderful Andy. I really like how you did the landing light and the dents in the drop tanks. How did you do the dents? A file? I'll have to do that the next time I do drop tanks, really adds realism to it.
