I get your frustration, but i think you will be even more dissapointed if you dont have a shot at this. in the end its whether you enjoy what your doing, but it were me, I would have a go

I'm travelling a lot for work and only today I came back to this forum...

Sad news, even if I was quite sure that the italian MoD can't have lot of pictures. At least, pictures useful for modellers that, as everybody knows, are not "normal" people.
We can admit it was a rather difficult goal, to replicate an old plane built in little more than 200 pcs and only few of them modified, 80 years ago... don't blame yourself (and possibly don't blame italians )

Few days ago I finished to read the book written by Balbo immediately after the North Atlantic cruise... I'm now an expert on the matter!
If you still want to build the "standard" S-55X, don't forget my offer
