I still can't see a model kit and not think about going into Zayre or Atlantic Thrift in the 60's and getting them for something like 77 cents. Zayre even had a sale where they were selling "Airlines" (i.e, Frog) 1/72 kits for 26 cents each. There was even a toy store about 2 blocks from my grandparents home that was selling those Revell ship kits for either 2/$1.00 or 3/$1.00.

Note that "John Smith Thatch." That is "Jimmy Thatch." Thatch's brother went to the USNA before he did and his name was Jimmy. So everyone was used to Jimmy Thatch being around and called his brother, that, too. Must have been confusing as hell.

Of course, the Yorktown Wildcats led by Thatch were the only ones that actually escorted any of the SBD and TBD strike aircraft from the three US carriers and engaged the 50 Zeros that were the IJN CAP. The Hornet and Enterprise Wildcat escorts got lost and missed the party.

Only the Yorktown Wildcats chose to cover the TBD's. Hornet and Enterprise stayed up with the SBD's and did not engage. At Coral Sea the Yorktown and Lexington put two Wildcats with the TBD's, lost both Wildcats, but lost no TBD's. At Midway only Yorktown put F4F's to cover the TBD's, and they put all they had to send.

VMF-211 Carl Davidson was the last F4F to press on to fight the IJN and never returned in plane number 9. There were 2 planes that raced off to fight but one turned around with engine problems. Number 11 was damaged on landing on the coral runway, Carl's regular mount and is in most of the boneyard photos. Recently VMF-211 (the Wake Island Avengers) operated their F-35B's on the carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth.
