It took the Red Army YEARS to quell the nationalist insurgency in Ukraine after WWII. Individual soldiers now have weaponry of much greater power and range. If Putin's war turns into a modern insurgency, Russians are going to be going 'Boom!' for a long time.....
My kids went to school with some kids whose grandfather was a part of that. An ardent anti-communist, he wrote a book about his activities during the war and after, and his escape to the US after the war. Later he was accused of being a nazi sympathizer and nearly prosecuted.

... and this one fed by weapons over permeable land borders -- because they won't have enough troops to both repress Ukraine and guard the western borders.

Even if Ukraine is forced by recent events to surrender territory or even wholesale, Russia is going to be stuck in for a long goddamned time, with a lot of their armory being fodder for metal-detectors for the next century or two.

Afghanistan 2.0, with another hostile population but this one technically able to home-build some seriously smart stuff. Additionally, the Russians have largely destroyed the infrastructure they invaded to capture in order to help their own economy, so there's no profit for them in the Donbas, and a shit-ton of UXO in the farmland without considering the IEDs that will be sown.

They grabbed a tarbaby with both hands, either way. Putin will end his life regretting this dumb decision, I think.

I don't think despots regret dumb decisions. They blame others for not carrying out their thoughts correctly
Hitler was still barking orders and babbling about how his generals had failed him as Russians roamed the streets above his bunker.

I am positive that these clowns actually believe the nonsense that's rattling around in their heads.

Even Hitler had his breakdown moment when he realized his aims were gone with the wind.

Blaming everyone else? $500.

Throwing a fit and ordering the room cleared? $5000.

Going to sleep at night? Priceless. At the end of his life he knew he screwed the pooch. Putin too will hopefully know that.

Right now, there is room for a deal-broker.
This war has proven that Crimean peninsula is not the valuable strategic real estate it once was. Much of the infrastructure has been destroyed.

The Donbass Region, much of it ethnically Russian, can reach a decision on its fate by a strictly monitored plebiscite.

IMO, a deal maker can end this war without a stab in the back to brave Ukraine.

In Gaza it will be the same story.
Watch this play out.

There's some merit here, if hard to swallow. Notwithstanding over US$300 billion in global military, humanitarian and financial aid since 2022, Ukraine has demonstrated that it cannot markedly regain the territory lost from 2022 onwards. Would another $300 billion make a difference? I doubt it.

Ukraine can go on to reach its goals of joining the EU and NATO (post POTUS47) and fully joining the liberal economic club even without the Donbas and Crimea areas. Look at the Republic of Ireland, is it less of a country even though they lost the northern bit? And there's Germany which today is 2/3 of its geographic size from its beginning in 1871. Britain lost an empire spanning the world, and still stands today. Look at the map of Poland before and after WW2, and the Poles lost their entire country until post WW1. And yet Poland today is culturally and nationally strong and a growing economic and military power in the EU.

I think some of members here underestimate national pride and justice. How would you guys feel if Mexico would annex Texas and Arizona? Would you think, oh well, it's only about 18% of the country and Mexico devastated it anyway, so they can have it?

Apart from that, do we want a dictator like Putin gain anything from being aggressive?

''...Roughly two-thirds of that aid, or $4 billion, will come in the form of Presidential Drawdown Authority packages—weapons and equipment drawn from U.S. stockpiles—while the other one-third, or $2 billion will be procured new as part of the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative...''

Hell no! On both counts.

I have long pointed out to the anti-Ukraine crowd, if Russia invaded and captured half of Florida for their vacation spot, would we say that's OK, let 'em have it?

One small problem: Kremlin doesn't stop.

In March 2014, Ukraine could not regain Crimea.
In September 2014 after the defeat in Ilovaisk, Ukraine could not regain the occupied territory in the east.
Ukraine tried to go on and to reach its goals of joining this and that... Ukraine was advised to look at historical examples (yes, Germany was mentioned many times).
Zelensky while being a naive and ignorant candidate in the president race of 2019, said about the war in the East: "We just need to stop shooting".
He fired people with the hawkish reputation, he created commissions and bodies for the negotiations and for cultural and humanitarian cooperation with occupied territories. He withdrawn troops in some places on the frontline. He wanted to meet Putin and resolve "misunderstandings"...
