Time for a thread on the venerable Dak...or Skytrain...or Gooney Bird.

Sometimes compared with the Willis Jeep as one of two war winning designs, the good 'ol Dak is without an equal (I reckon !). It was once said the only thing that you could replace the Dak with, would be another one !. If you had something to transport, if you could physically get inside the old girl, she would take it...anywhere !.

She's been criminaly overloaded...one was loaded with a full load of PSP (Pierced Steel Planking) during the Island Hopping campaign, when the loady miss-read the label and thought he was loading PAP (Pierced Aluminium Planking). The load sheet said soo many pieces, so loaded them all. And the Dak took off and completed the mission !.

During this campaign, one landed on an Island that had no fuel, so the skipper had a quite chat with the cooks and filled up the tanks with cooking oil....then started her up and trundled off and completed his mission.

One flew with a wing from a DC2...it was all they could find so they bolted it on and called it a DC2 and half...and it flew.

Sabres where launched once to intercept a high flying bogey...somewhere higher than FL32. The intercept pilots couldn't beleive their eyes when they finally caught up with a Dak...at that altitude and speed...and the Tower wouldnt believe them. the Dak was turbo prop conversion !

She's been left in the artic circle, buried under snow for years, dug out, fired up and flown home !.

She also has a dark side when converted to gunship specs.

    She is irreplaceable !

Lets have your shots of fabulous old workhorse.

    Great shots guys!

Here are some of the BBMF's DC3 taken at Leuchars in 2006 with my old point and shoot (they didn't turn up last because of weather). They are a bit grainy but the best I have.

Great shots of a wondefful old lady of the skies. Let's hope the Dak is still around after another 70 years.

IIRC, this aircraft has been in continuous service longer than any other, yes? What a great ol' bird.

    Best,

DC3's and C47's were the skydiving workhorses till the early 80's!

And yes, the guy on the left is me.

Yep, I took those a few years ago. Some may be gone and others added. I was going to go out there today and see if I could get some updated shots but its a blizzard out again today.

Seems a pretty active place. I am on the Ruud Leuw mailing list and it seems that there is very often a mention of a Basler, or former Basler bird. I will post a new one to the scene this afternoon. It showed up yesterday at Riverside and is a new restoration.
