Sprayed a few shades of olive drab to get the random weathering effect, clear coated it and tomorrow I will be masking to paint the bottom neutral gray.

Some more fun comes along about 42-12859, as #10 was known to be the Squadron commander's aircraft. If Lynch's earlier G-1 was numbered 19, the odds are very good that Major Prentice gave him the #10 aircraft when he replaced him as Squadron commander. So in this case, I figure that Lynch would have overpainted Prentice's Double Trouble marking with fresh olive drab paint. I took a piece of Tamiya tape the size of the gun door, wrote Double Trouble on it, and cut around the edges in a random pattern to look like fresh paint over the white letters. I sprayed it with Mission Models Olive drab 41, a much darker color than the faded olive drab. It may or may not be correct, but I like to add small touches to add to the story.

Masked and painted the lower surface Model Master Neutral gray. Then I put a touch of rust in the cup of Neutral gray to get a brownish tint, and sprayed light patches on the bottom, very subtle but the effect can be noticed. Only downside while removing the masks the nose broke off, will need to super glue that back on or maybe use epoxy since it is full of lead.

Lots of thin strips of masking tape were cut to do the panel line masking, this was the weatherization tape applied for shipping the Lightnings to the Pacific theater. I painted around the edges of the tape with Tamiya Smoke, a transparent black color. It looked a little too dark when I took the tape off so I over sprayed it with thinned base color to blend it in better.

Hey Dave I was curious whether or not your kit instructions make mention of parts C11, C12, C13, and C14? These are included in the J kit but no mention in the instructions. The parts seem to be for the supercharger intake air filter that mounts in the wheel well.

Yes, per John Clements, a noted P-38 expert, the air filters should be used on the J also. Tamiya must have researched a modern P-38J that had the filters removed, so they have you cut the tabs off of the landing gear that hold the filters on. If you want to install the filters, install C-24 instead of J-4 in step 16 and C-23 instead of J-5 in step 26.

Great info thanks. I had no idea these were "a thing" until I saw a drawing in one of my P-38 references that showed the thing attached to the intake duct. I need to look into these some more as it intrigues me now that you showed me that they supposedly mount to the undercarriage.

Here is a closeup of how they look on the struts. The tabs are molded a certain way like a shovel so that you can only put the filters on one way, and they line up with the intake pipes perfectly when you install the landing gear.
