I had previously made masks by scanning the painting instructions and tracing the green camouflage spots in illustrator. This was saved as a SVG file and traced in the Silhouette studio software and cut from vinyl. I placed a circle cut from Tamiya tape and attached to the insignia location, then applied the vinyl mask. Need to spray each wing separately, then each fuselage side. Got both wings and 1 side of fuselage done.

The mask for this side was a little more complicated due to the air intake, luckily there's a blue stripe that goes there so should be ok. Got a little softer edge around the scoop as the mask didn't stick fully down, but I will wait until I see where the stripe goes and maybe touch up any edges later.

Starting decals, the blue stripe runs right along 2 panel lines at the back, so I was able to position the insignia and the rear stripe to line everything up, then add the long stripe. I used the Mr Mark setter and sol so hopefully it dries nice and smooth tomorrow.

I ended up masking and painting the blue stripe to avoid fettling with the long decal.
That's probably the best way, but I read a review of the kit saying that the decals worked flawlessly so figured I would try them first. It looks like my mask is a couple of mm low of the stripe, but once dry I will brush some green to make the spots closer to the stripe on the bottom.

The blue stripe on the side came out well, only needs a little more Mr Mark softer and setter around the edge where it meets the fuselage. While waiting for this to dry I added the red wing no walk lines on the flaps, and around the gun bay. Tamiya even knocked out the center of the clear film where the cannon bulge is. I also added the hinomaru to the upper wings, camouflage looked to be perfectly placed to fit those in the correct spots.
