Yes, please do.

On Black 6, I took Dan's suggestion and evened out the 81 over the gun cover to pick up more of the wing. Sprayed with Future and awaiting decals. Trying ot get Black 6 and my Blitz ready for next Saturday's model show.

Good stuff Dan, looking forward to pics!

Now, to start, I'd just like to say that my cat is pretty awesome in general (for a cat); he's one of the most laid back, friendly and smart cats I've ever come across. And his name is Frank - which is a pretty cool name for a cat. Normally, ol' Frank and I hang out quite a bit... He just saunters around, curls up some place warm, licks whats left of his balls and quite likes to stroll over to me at random and headbutt me in the face, as some sort of cat 'pack greeting' thing. This is all good by me.

However, at the core, he is still a cat... And as a result, suffers from the inevitable 'curiousity brain-snap' every now and then. Today's brain-snap kind of takes the cake for recent history; I will add at this point that the D-15 is SAFE however. BUT... I have a LOT of books (around 3000, which doesn't include magazines) and thus, have some rather inventive ways of stacking, double-stacking, triple-stacking and repurposing 'stuff' as book shelves (and model kit box shelves). So, just as I was settling down in bed in the wee hours of the morning, Frank - in his infinite wisdom - decides something like "Sh|t; I've been walking past these bookcases for the last 8-9 years and not once have they done ANYTHING to me... I don't trust that! Lets climb these things and ATTACK when the shelves least expect it!". So, in my semi-asleep state, I hear this galloping noise (much like a freight train drawing closer and closer); through drowsey eyes, I catch this ginger and white BLUR, doing very near the speed of heat, rip through the door, bounce off the bed, 90 deg course change - up on a desk (missing the D-15), 90 degree course change - onto the top of a high backed desk-chair, then OFF the top of the chair, aiming for the top shelf on a 1.8m high bookcase....

Of course, being the 'cat-of-action' that he is, he has failed in his recon duties and upon arriving (at a fair old clip) at the top shelf of aforementioned bookcase, finds its FULL... Of Books. Now here's where it gets blurry; from what I can tell, he has skittled a bunch of books out of the way and since they were zigging one way (towards the floor) he has zagged the other (towards the wall), use the full force of 'Frank-power' to push the bookcase away from the wall... Suddenly I find myself a LOT more awake, being about 1.7m away from a 1.8m bookcase, with a good 500+kg of precariously balanced books on it, that seems intent on toppling...

But does this stop our boy Frank?!?!? HELL NO!!!

In his PANIC, he manages to tear along the top row of books (sending books flying, in a cacophony of cat-insanity fueled chaos) and take a LUNGE for the adjacent and similiarly packed, 2.0m bookshelf. I could no longer (safely) watch and found myself rolling over (away from what I can only describe as a wave of books, trying its level best to close out on me) and getting pinged by the odd book from bookcase 1 as HUNDREDS of books turn my previously serene, quiet room in to some sort of bibliographic battlefield! Just as the noise from bookcase 1 (emptying its contents across the room, my bed, me and trying to KILL me with the bookcase itself) abates, the noise from bookcase 2 reaches its peak (it too emptying its contents over a surprisingly large area, before the bookcase itself crashed into a metal cabinet).

So like any sane person, I hunkered down, til all was quiet... only the galloping noise of a certain cat, beating a hasty retreat could heard.

Thus the relaxing day of Modelling, has been replaced with picking up probably a tonne of books, model kits, DVD's, CD's and fixing a book case... The place still looks like a bomb hit it. But regardless, I am determined to get at very least, the 0.5mm gap (at the rear of the lower engine covers) packed this evening/morning, after temporarily stacking the last of these DVD's and Books somewhere and reclaiming my bed!

Yes off-topic I know; but these are the trials and tribulations of your fellow modeller! Spare him a thought as you glance around your UNDESTROYED rooms and over your ORGANISED bookcases and CLEARED beds!

Now there's another pic we need......

Hahaha, yeah I should have taken a picture on my phone-camera; my camera-camera was under a pile of books... And yeah, Im still cleaning up, taking breaks to work on the D-15. I'm trying something that I am not yet 100% sure about with too, but we shall see... I am intentionally leaving steps and misalignments with the Engine Cowlings and Covers and etc, as well as going to leave other panels slightly raised. Just want to try and make the 'aircraft' look a little rushed and 'engineered on the fly'; I'm also about 0.25mm too thick on the LEFT side of the cowling-to-fuselage, so I need to CAREFULLY knock that down. The good thing about having to work on the left, is that the supercharger scoop ends up covering about a non-trival percentage of that join anyway.

Back to cleaning... :(

Strewth Dan, haven't you got enough work to do...:D

Well I thought so - two jobs + Uni + research + slowly writing a book - but I guess my little buddy Frank, had other ideas. Still, its given me a chance to reorganise (and clean up a pile of crap, loose papers and accumulations) and etc. I didnt realise I had so many kits sitting here either - over 20 of each Ta 152's and Fw 190D's (1/48 and 1/32), ten He 219's (most in 1/48 and one 1/32), ten Bf 109G/K's (and I don't even particularly LIKE Bf 109's); and there are very few things I have 'one' of as well... But, back to the cleaning/organising; moving all my resin into new/stronger containers.

got a few decals on red cat
also re painted the tail as i did not like how the mottle i put on turned out
masked and primed for the Rv band, after doing 4 Jg301 crates you'd think i would remember them by now !!!!

@Rochie - by the way mate, the RVD band on that profile of yours there, isn't quite typical for JG 301 either!

Typical for a D-9 was the RED beginning at the REAR EDGE of the Fuselage Insert, extending 450mm forwards (finishing 50mm from the front edge of the Insert) - from there it was yellow, until a vertical line that passed THROUGH the Jacking Point and PARALLEL to the fuselage vertical panel lines (ie, the line to the rear of the access hatch, for example) and the Balkenkruez. As you probably know, the front edge of the RVD band was NOT parallel to the rear edge on most JG 301 D-9's... And JG 26 too, for that matter!

Hey Guys

Hope everyone is having a great weekend. Had this Monday off which has been very nice indeed! I've spent the last few days trying to catch up on the GB thread, which I can now claim mission accomplished! Its now 3:15 Central US plus or minus. So! @ Zaggy, your Cattos story was awesome. I too have two four legged monsters, one with more balls than the other, for which he is due his "adjustment". For that reason alone I keep him out of the studio as I also have the hobby of ammunition reloading. The idea of sending hundreds of live primers to the ground is rather... troubling.

As to the Dora! After Andy invited me to this build, I figured it would be best if I pause a little bit on the build and catch up on the thread. That being completed, I can now move forward. It occurred to me that building a 1/24 scale Dora vs most of you guys doing a 1/48.. I have no excuse for holding back on the details. As I indicated before, I'm a huge gear head. As a Restoration Specialist on motorcycles, I love the mechanical do-dads and what-nots. That being said, my next area of attention is to the engine mounts, as well as the firewall, which then brings us to the MG131's and all of the included mechanical jee jaw that's in that area. Andy has done a great job on detailing his Dora. I can only hope to add at least as much as he has.

I think I'm the only one doing a 1/24 Trumpeter Dora.. Is that right Andy? Its not exactly a cheap kit, plus shes pretty big...

Back to my progress. Over the last few days I've spent some time looking at period photos of opened Dora's for ideas of adding engine detail as well as gun bay detail. The engine mounts that are included in the Trumpeter kit are ok but do have some design elements that need to be changed. One of the stand-outs is the Oil Tank on the left side of the engine area. This is one of the larger parts in the engine bay, so I plan on making some changes here. The included oil tank is rather plain with some key details missing. The filler neck and its cap are not there, as well as some other fitting details. My plan is to make a completely new Oil Tank. I'm using the original oil tank as a foundation for the new tank which I will be modeling after a very good photograph of a restored Dora. I'll post up a few pictures so you guys can see what I'm talking about. Also, I will be working on the engine mounts to close up the open holes that the designers added in hopes of getting close to the original look of these mounts. We shall see!

Again Thanks guys for all of the great content of this Group Build. I've had a lot of fun catching up!

Take care

Denis

@Denis - yeah I keep Frank well away from my reloading kit too; thankfully he's never shown much interest in Propellant, Micrometers, the pair of Presses, etc! That said, he's also been walking past that same bookcase for 8-9 years and never really shown much interest in it either... But I am now strangely curious to the effect of emptying an entire box of 1000 primers onto the concrete; can't say I've ever had a primer ignite from being dropped, but I also have a Pegulum (spelling?) insulation mat under my workspace, so they're more than likely to hit that.

As for the 1/24 Trumpeter D-9 - I must admit, I have always wanted to tackle one, despite the 'issues' (from memory nothing too major; just iffy engine cowls, fuselage gun 'deck-lid' contours, default tail wheel position, gear door inner surfaces, morane antennae, fabric surfaces); get a Rutmann blown canopy for it, the Verlinden set is supposedly quite good, etc.

Out of curiousity, 1) what decals are in the kit; 2) what centre-wing/wheel well fairing is present (the Radial fairing, such as on (D-9) 601088 or the Inline fairing, as on (D-13) 836017); and 3) are there any 1/24 aftermarket marking options?

thanks Dan have done the band as you described i think !

Hey Zag

Regarding primers, yea they are pretty safe. I've never had one go shizz nit either. Hope it stays that way. When President Clinton was in my Dad and I went a little crazy and bought "a few" boxes. Lets just hope the house never catches fire..

Regarding my Birdie, I've had the kit for a few years. Just had other stuff ahead of it.. you know? Anyway, its on its way now with plenty of Thanks to you guys. I was just checking around the forum the other day and figured, "what the hell..". I also came across Waynes Me262. I need to check back in on the thread Wayne. You where working on the cockpit at the time..

So since my project is going to be Red 1, which is Work Number 210003, as accepted by Oblt. Dortenmann on 20 Spetember 1944 at Oldenburg, Germany, according to Jerry Crandall's Volume One, page 24, "Originally fitted with a early style canopy, type 8-190.122 with no antenna pulley system", I don't think a blown canopy will work at this point. I haven't looked closely at the clear parts yet, but I seem to remember several builders going with a aftermarket unit.

I believe I will need to heavily modify/change most things north of the firewall in terms of engine cowling stuffs. I'm still focused on the engine and its mounts at this point so I'm not going to worry about all of that right now.

As to the decals, They are for Black 12, Work Number 500658. I'l shoot you guys a picture of the sheet in just a minute or two. Oh.. There is a set for Yellow 11 too. But interesting only one set of tail work number decals. Was this the same plane? Also a set of Fuse bands in yellow and white and a set in green and white. The decal sheet looks really nice. While talking decals, what do you guys suggest that I do about decals for Red 1? I don't believe there are many choices for 1/24 German decals out there. Any ideas?

As to the centre-wing/wheel well fairing, I don't think it has any detail such as that.. I will shoot you a picture of that as well. Interesting.. Just noticed that the kit comes with two gun cowl versions. Cool! I hope I can use one of them!

I've glued up some .015 styrene sheet to the backs of the engine mounts, so I need to trim that now and then to the camera-camera (awesome Zaggy!) Your Meds seemed to have hit the right spot on that post! Then a little thin CA in the holes in hopes to re-create a nice chamfer. Oh.. and I have the mold box made for the new oil tank as well. So I should have a good supply of photo ops! Soon to post up...

:) Denis

So!

Here are a few pictures for you guys. And Zaggy I took a couple for you too! You guys might find the Oil Tank mold box interesting too. Since we restore very old motorcycles and cars at the museum, we sometimes have to re-create parts from scratch. I'm sure alot of you guys have done Silicone Molds before but others may be new to this.. A basic box is built around a clay base that holds the half of the part that you wish to recreate. Then a two part silicone mold making grule is mixed up and put into a vacuum chamber to remove any air bubbles. Then the grule is poured into the mold box.. I'll post up a picture so you guys can see... Its interesting stuff..

Here is the stock Left Side Engine Mount with the original Oil Tank:

And the inside detail of the original right side mount:

Here is a picture of the clay Oil Tank Mold. You can see the original oil tank just below the clay, then I added some detail to the outside of the tank. At this point the detail elements are rough, but it should give you guys some idea to what is going on..

Here is a picture of the Lower Wing for Zaggy, looking at the outside wheel well areas for a fairing..

And the twin gun cowls that come with the kit.. I guess the lower one is a five piece early cowl?

And the included decal sheet:

I'll post up another picture of the oil tank box when the hot glue stops being hot..

Cheers!
