What was the size of Skyraider squadron, or any squadron, on the Essex class carriers in Vietnam? Was it 12 or more?

U.S. Air Force mechanics perform maintenance on a Douglas A-1J Skyraider (s/n 52-142028, nicknamed "Priscilla's Phoenix") of the 1st Special Operations Squadron, 56th Special Operations Wing, at Nakhon Phanom Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, in October 1972. In November 1972, all remaining Skyraiders of the 1st SOS were turned over to the Vietnamese Air Force.

This A-1 from the 22nd SOS boasts the quintessential ordnance load for killing trucks on the Ho Chi Minh trail. The M36 incendiary bomb, better known as the "funny bomb" to the pilots who carried it, was perhaps the best weapon available for this mission. Once released the clamshell canister split open dispensing 182 thermite bomblets that ignite anything they contact. The rocket pod contains rounds fitted with either anti-personnel flechette or WP warheads. Napalm and M1A frag clusters and flares round out the load.

Jan, For your collection direct from Viet -
The Skyraiders were my favorite aircraft and saved my young ass more than once. The AF however was in love with their jets and sent them in more often than not. But like the Jolly Green and Spooky, when the Skyraiders were around they were perfect ground support and the VC/NVA were toast. Plus they carried a LOT or ordinance and could loiter in the area for a long time unlike the jets
