However, the family obituary card has got the date of death wrong. It was 18th July 1940, not 16th. Also, the obituary card says 'in einem Luftkampf' (in combat). The story I got from the Staffelkapitän of 3./210, Oberleutnant Otto Hintze, was that he had taken the 109 to Antwerp for repair. Upon completion, he took it up to test it, but started trying to do aerobatics in it (as witnessed from the ground), and the starboard wing collapsed.

3./ErpGr. 210 Messerschmitt Bf109E-4, Yellow 12. Crashed at Antwerp-Deurne when starboard wing collapsed in vertical dive during test flight following maintenance. Pilot Gefreiter Ludwig Spreitzer killed.

Credited with 52 victories of which 43 were claimed at night whilst flying variants of the Messerschmitt Bf 110 heavy fighter. The majority of his victories were claimed over the Western Front in Defence of the Reich missions against the Royal Air Force's Bomber Command.

Wrknr 464162 from 10./JG3 based at Lippspringe Germany at 1-1-1945. The aircraft was involved in operation "Boddenplatte", Luftwaffe's last big air campaign against allied airfields in north/west Europe. He took off at Lippspringe and the target was Eindhoven Air Force Base.
