Mai was a reporter with the Luftwaffe War Reporting Kompanie 3. HS = Heckschutz = rear gunner. Luftwaffe war reporters were given the lowest officer rank, Leutnant, while posted to an operational unit, and wrote articles about what it was like operating with a front-line unit. Not all survived, as can be seen.
