That's 'cause your analyzing them from the wrong perspective; from in front rather than from behind. You've probably never let one get in front of you. Now if you're comparing a hot rod Subie with a fancy exhaust to a stock VW, then all bets are off. I bet you wouldn't hear the difference at idle between a Wright 1820 and a Pratt 1830, either.

Mea culpa, mea maxima culpa. Shoulda said all AIRCOOLED flat fours sound alike. Some of my best friends are aircooled flat fours and I've even owed my life to one on occasion, but I still wouldn't want my sister to marry one.
