I understand that unlike our WASPs the British female ATA pilots were limited to short distance flights within the British Isles only.

British Isles only, yes, but not always short distance (anywhere outside the British isles would be hostile territory).
And weren't our WASPS restricted to CONUS only? Difference in size of country, but on a global scale that would be short distance flights, too.

No, our WASPs flew overseas, too. I recall reading of a P-47 being delivered to a base in China and they were astonished when a woman got out.
And as for "short distance flights" note that the whole of the British Isles would easily fit into Texas.
