I played back the clip a few times. It seems that when he came out of the loop he allowed the aircraft to stay in a 90 degree vertical dive momentarily, and then came back on the cyclic, more than likely in an effort not to load up the blades or mast but obviously he was too low.
It seems because he was flying a helicopter, he did not allow himself a "hard deck" when doing some of his maneuvers. Very tragic.

Yep, very sad. It was to late to turn it into a Half Cuban Eight as well.
I went back and looked at it as well. I thought I remembered he pulled up from level flight.
I wonder if it would have been better to start the loop from a slight dive for airspeed?
Or would That have loaded up the blades and mast?
