I have gone into the chicago river and into the Illinois. Hit a da*m log and bent a prop. Limping to a Marina cost me the shaft. $6000 and 3 weeks taught me to stay off the river.
Before July on the river we call it log dodging! We usually go on the river out west of La Salle -Peru. The bottom is mostly sand and mud. Very pretty and not as much traffic. The only time I ever lost a prop in 15 years on the river is when I put in at I-55 and the Des Planes to test out my motor after I had it rebuilt. Strayed outside the buoys and hit a rock where the Du page river comes in. Last time I ever put in there.
