It's cold and clinical, with a vertical drop of around 300 feet before the canopy is fully deployed, with a jump height of 800 feet. Many hate it, and there are often 'refusals' during training. But I loved it ..... I know, I'm strange!!
The balloon is not used now, with the first jumps on the Para Course being done from the tail gate of a Chinnook helicopter, before moving on to the Hercules for 'proper' drops, in sticks.

I was always glad to get out of the Herc - noisy, smelly, cramped thing! I did my course on Argosies, which were luxurious compared to the C130, although you had to 'launch' out of the door to clear the boundary layer, or you'd do a 'rivet inspection' down the fuselage!!
