They were burning coal... well almost. The R-3350 engine in that beast could burn/use almost 5gal of oil in an hour and still be in spec in some cases. For some ops AUX oil tanks were installed.

Was encouraged to clean wings on Argus as a punishment, the 3350 did use tons of oil. Stopped in Hickham and some guy in the tower wasn't familiar with the smoke on starting and called Fire Dept out . Can't recall but Argus oil tank was massive because of its long flight times up to 30hours or more
