I'm writing a figurative language lesson for my class of 9-10 year olds. It's on similies, metaphors and personification. I want to use music since I"m tired of the same old stories and bangning my head when I don't see my students use figurative language in their own essay writing.
I am looking for songs with examples of each to have the kids listen to and try to hear the examples; then we'll do discussions and such on how they improve the song and help with the mental image of the story.
Do you know any songs off hand that use similies, metaphors or personification??
(Similie= compares 2 things using like or as...."as lazy as the tropical sun; as smart as a whip)
(Metaphor=comparison of 2 unlike things that usually have something in common... not the sharpest tool in the shed; the streets were a furnace; feeling blue...)
(Personification= giving human qualities to objects...trees danced in the wind; fear knocked on the door...)
So far I have...
Fireflies by owl city
ol' man river
high water everywhere by charly patton
the river by garth brooks
music of the night by andrew lloyd weber
the wind cries mary by jimi hendrix
Thanks a bunch!!!
(Even Christmas songs would be OK as I can repeat the lesson later around the holidays as a review... jack frost nipping at your nose......)
